We create a positive learning environment in which everyone can be successful through the use of cognitive science approaches to teaching and learning. We teach an ambitious curriculum, through which students can aspire to become excellent learners and develop a lifelong curiosity for science.

The Curriculum at Key Stage 3

In

In years 7 and 8, students are taught science in mixed prior attainment classes. The curriculum is based on the AQA activate scheme of learning to provide a good foundation for the AQA GCSE science courses later on. The first topics they study – cells, matter and energy – underpin the whole curriculum throughout their time at Frogmore. There are low stakes assessments at the end of each topic, culminating in a longer high stakes assessment, usually combining 3 topics to encourage revision of synoptic content. In addition to key concepts in science, students will develop their laboratory skills through a series of practical opportunities embedded throughout the curriculum.

Students begin their AQA GCSE science course in year 9. The first 3 topics build upon the foundations learned in year 7 and 8 – cells, matter and energy. They then go on to learn scientific concepts in greater depth and continue to advance their laboratory skills through required practicals, which are examined in the written assessments. They will be assessed in a similar way to year 7 and 8.

The Curriculum at Key Stage 4

In years 10 and 11, students continue to extend their knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics. They begin to use mathematical skills much more frequently and are expected to write extended answers. We practise exam technique during lessons to develop these skills.

Students are set retrieval homework on a weekly basis to assist with the recall and application of scientific content and skills through independent learning. They will experience at least 2 sets of mock examinations which help us decide the best AQA GCSE science route for them.

Subject Enrichment:

We run a science club for year 7 and year 8 students after school, in which pupils are provided with opportunities to expand on the science learned in class through exciting science experiments and projects.

There are opportunities throughout the year for students to represent the school at science competitions.

We organise for external speakers to join us and demonstrate science through a practical and careers-based context
